What do you get when a Disney-obsessed 8 year old gets to name her new baby sister? A kid named Ariella, or in other words, ME. It's true, my mom and dad were so worried about my older sister Leigh feeling like she was being replaced after having eight years of being an only child, that they allowed her to pick my name. Of course, at the time she was obsessed with The Little Mermaid and Cinderella. That's where my name came from, she smooshed "Ariel" and "Cinderella" together to come up with "Ariella". But what's more shocking than that? My mom let her keep that name! So, that's the story of how I got my name.
My mom and my dad died when I was only 3-years old following a bad car accident. The only one in the car that wasn't killed or even injured, was me. I don't remember the accident, I just know that for a really long time, my sister said that it was all her fault. That was when Carrie took both of us in to her house and became our new "mum". I couldn't call her "mommy" because she isn't my real mom, I knew that but she was still the mum that was raising me. For the past 7 years, Carrie was responsible for me, even after Leigh left our home two years ago to come back to La Push. The last year I lived with Carrie was scary. She got really sick with something she called cancer, and she was always sleeping or at the doctor a lot. I stayed with her the whole time. My favorite memory was when Leigh brought her boyfriend, Rahl, to meet Carrie and they both stayed over Christmas and New Years. The day I went back to my old school was the day they both left to go back to their home. I hated that I finally had my sister back, and she had a separate house that was far away. I stayed with Carrie right up until the day that the principal at school came and pulled me out of class to tell me that she died. Then that night they took me to some terrible house, filled with a ton of kids and an awful woman that we had to call "Ma'am" anytime we spoke to her. I learned quickly to just stay quiet and hide away from her, that way the amount of smacks I got was less. Soon, Leigh showed up and took me out of that scary place with all those other kids and brought me back to live in La Push with her and Rahl, where I'm now living. Leigh is now my "guardian", which she says means "I don't have any parents anymore, but until [I] turn 18, [she] would act like my mom and take care of [me]." Now, over a year after coming back to La Push with my sister, I'm here and finally turned 10-years old, which means I got an iPod AND the bedroom in the basement. Or I got that bedroom because my sister is going to have a baby, but I don't care because it means I have space of my own to practice all of my dance stuff for the competition team Ms. Jennadiah asked me to be on with some of the other big kids at the dance studio. |
